An Army specialist has been charged with the murder of a fellow soldier whose body was discovered at an Army base last week.
Officials announced Thursday that Spc. Wooster Rancy, 21, is accused of killing 23-year-old Sgt. Sarah Roque. Roque’s body was found in a dumpster at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri last week.
Rancy also faces charges of obstruction of justice and is currently in pretrial confinement while awaiting a preliminary hearing. Originally from Miami, Rancy joined the Army in 2022 and serves as a combat engineer.
Details surrounding Rancy’s arrest and the motive behind the killing remain unclear.
Roque, a resident of Ligonier, Indiana, was reported missing when she failed to report for duty last week. Following the discovery of her body, Maj. Gen. Christopher Beck confirmed her death was being investigated as a homicide, calling it a tragedy that no family or unit should have to endure.
Since enlisting in 2020, Roque served as a mine dog handler and was awarded the Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and Army Service Ribbon.
“Sarah served our country with bravery and honor,” Beck said, emphasizing that she was also a beloved daughter, sister, and friend.
