PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – Following the report of human cases of bird flu in Washington state, officials have confirmed that three of those individuals traveled to Oregon while infected and were monitored during their visit.

These three cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) were identified in Washington after exposure to poultry that tested positive for the virus on October 15. As of October 31, there have been a total of nine reported cases in Washington, including those involving individuals who traveled to Oregon.

Officials from the Oregon Health Authority state that the affected individuals have returned to Washington and will continue to be monitored by local health authorities for ten days following their last exposure.

“The risk to the general public remains low at this time,” said Dr. Melissa Sutton from Oregon Public Health. “However, individuals who have had close or prolonged unprotected contact with infected birds or contaminated environments are at a higher risk of infection.”

The Washington Department of Health also reported an additional bird flu case that resulted in the euthanization of 800,000 birds in Franklin County after they tested positive on October 15. Another case was detected at a commercial poultry farm in Clackamas County, where those birds were similarly euthanized to prevent further spread of the disease.

Details about the specific Clackamas County poultry facility involved in this incident are not clear, but the Oregon Department of Agriculture noted that the operation housed 150,000 birds.

To date, there have been no human cases of HPAI that originated in Oregon.
