WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — The Associated Press has declared former President Donald Trump the winner of the presidential race, securing his return to the White House. Trump achieved victory by winning key battlegrounds Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, which together provided the 29 electoral votes needed to surpass the 270-vote threshold. By 5:34 a.m. ET on Wednesday, he had amassed 277 electoral votes.

Before the official race call, Trump addressed supporters at the Palm Beach Convention Center in West Palm Beach, Fla., flanked by family and staff. “We overcame obstacles that nobody thought possible,” Trump remarked. He promised to tirelessly work for a “strong, safe, and prosperous America,” envisioning a “golden age” for the nation. Trump also expressed a commitment to helping the country heal.

Although he claimed to have won the popular vote, final results for that count remain pending.

This marks Trump’s return to office following his contested 2020 election defeat and his involvement in events surrounding the Jan. 6 Capitol attack. He is now the first convicted felon to hold the presidency.

Republican strategists argue that Trump’s win reflects voter sentiment that the country was in better shape four years ago than today. “Voters have really short memories,” said Republican strategist Alex Conant. “People think about inflation every single day when they’re buying gas, when they’re going to the grocery store.”

Despite numerous controversies, Trump retained strong support among his base, convincing enough Americans to bring him back to the White House. His victory deals a setback to Vice President Harris and President Biden’s legacy, which has been marked by challenges at the border, inflation, and global uncertainties.
