CDC confirms Oregon's first human case of bird flu

On Friday, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed a case of the highly pathogenic bird flu in a person in Oregon. The infected individual is connected to a previously reported outbreak at a commercial poultry operation in the state, where the virus has affected 150,000 birds, according to state health authorities.

This year, 52 people across eight states have tested positive for the virus, which has also spread to over 500 dairy herds, the CDC reported. All affected individuals were farm workers who had direct contact with infected animals, except for one case in Missouri.

While the CDC did not provide additional details on the Oregon case, officials emphasized that there is no evidence of person-to-person transmission, and the public’s risk remains low. Last month, the H5N1 strain of bird flu was also detected in a pig on a backyard farm in Oregon, marking the first time the virus had been found in swine in the U.S.

The CDC has advised that farm workers exposed to infected animals should undergo testing, even if they show no symptoms. Since 2022, the virus has led to the destruction of over 100 million poultry birds, making it the deadliest bird flu outbreak in U.S. history.
