The New York Stock Exchange plans to expand its after-hours trading session

PUBLISHED FRI, OCT 25 2024 10:26 AM EDT

On Friday, the New York Stock Exchange announced its intention to extend trading hours on its all-electronic exchange to 22 hours a day.

This decision reflects the growing interest in all-day trading within U.S. markets in recent years. In May 2023, Robinhood introduced “24/5 trading,” which operates from 8 p.m. ET on Sundays to 8 p.m. ET on Fridays. Additionally, global cryptocurrency markets function 24/7.

Under the new plan, trading on the NYSE Arca electronic exchange would commence at 1:30 a.m. and conclude at 11:30 p.m. ET on weekdays, pending regulatory approval, according to Intercontinental Exchange, the parent company of NYSE. Currently, the NYSE allows extended trading for stocks from 4 a.m. ET to 8 p.m. ET, while regular trading hours are from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

NYSE Arca is recognized as a leading platform for trading exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and over 8,000 U.S.-listed securities. All U.S.-listed stocks, ETFs, and closed-end funds will be available for trading during the 22-hour period on the electronic exchange, according to Intercontinental Exchange.

Kevin Tyrrell, head of markets at the New York Stock Exchange, stated, “The NYSE’s initiative to extend U.S. equity trading to 22 hours a day, five days a week highlights the strength of our U.S. capital markets and the growing demand for our listed securities worldwide. As the steward of the U.S. capital markets, the NYSE is pleased to lead the way in facilitating exchange-based trading for our U.S.-listed companies and funds to investors in various time zones across the globe.”

The NYSE plans to submit updated rules for the extended trading hours to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Trades executed during the extended hours will be processed through the Depository Trust and Clearing Corp.
