The upcoming iPhone SE 4, expected to launch early next year, is likely to feature Apple’s first in-house 5G modem, according to supply chain analyst Jeff Pu. In a recent note with Haitong International Securities, Pu explained that Apple plans to debut its custom 5G modem with the iPhone SE 4 and will later introduce an Apple-made Wi-Fi 7 chip in the iPhone 17 Pro in late 2025.
Pu’s forecast aligns with previous predictions that Apple will integrate both the custom modem and Wi-Fi 7 chips across most iPhones by 2027. Similarly, noted analyst Ming-Chi Kuo anticipates that at least one model of the iPhone 17, expected in 2025, will include an Apple-designed Wi-Fi 7 chip. Kuo also predicts Apple’s custom 5G modem will appear in the ultra-slim iPhone 17.
Kuo and Pu both indicate that the iPhone SE 4 will use Apple’s 5G modem while still relying on a Broadcom Wi-Fi chip, with Apple’s fully custom solution being phased in over time. This shift to in-house modems and Wi-Fi technology will reduce Apple’s reliance on Qualcomm and Broadcom, giving the company more control over its hardware and potentially lowering costs.
The fourth-generation iPhone SE is rumored to have a design similar to the iPhone 14, including a 6.1-inch OLED display, Face ID, a USB-C port, an upgraded A-series chip, a single 48-megapixel rear camera, 8GB of RAM to support Apple Intelligence, and the new Apple-designed 5G modem. Its release is anticipated in the first half of 2025, likely around March or April.
