Dear iPhone, could you please stop labeling my friends as 'deceased'?

Apple’s new AI feature, Apple Intelligence, was just released with iOS 18.1, bringing tools like a writing assistant for emails and a Clean Up tool for easy object removal in photos. However, some anticipated features, like AI in Siri and Visual Intelligence, are still missing and are expected in iOS 18.2.

One feature in Apple Intelligence that many find frustrating, though, is notification summaries for text messages. The tool aims to use AI to summarize notifications, making it easier to skim key details from apps. While it does well with emails, it often misinterprets casual text messages, especially those with sarcasm, slang, or jokes. For instance, after a friend joked about being “dead tired” after a tough hike, Apple Intelligence summarized it as a message about how a trainer “killed” them, missing the intended tone entirely.

Many users share similar experiences online, with some posting amusing or unsettling summaries they’ve received, highlighting how the AI struggles with informal language.

If the summaries are more bothersome than helpful, they can be turned off for messages:

  1. Open Settings
  2. Navigate to Notifications > Summarize Previews
  3. Toggle off Messages

Now, individual texts will appear on the lock screen as usual. Though notification summaries work well for emails and other apps, text messages remain a challenge for Apple Intelligence. And yes, Apple Intelligence, that’s sarcasm.
